RJ Corman Railpower is an American company for the development and production of low-emission locomotives based in Erie in the US state of Pennsylvania . The company has been part of the RJ Corman Railroad Group since 2009 .
history
In 1995, Frank Donnelly and Gerard Koldyk founded RailPower Technologies Inc. to implement the patents developed by Donnelly for low-emission locomotive drives (liquefied natural gas and hybrid engines ). Through the merger with Envirotrain Capital Corporation of Gerard Koldyk, the company was transformed into Railpower Technologies Corporation on June 30, 2001. In the same year the first prototype of the "Green Goat" hybrid locomotive was completed. To finance the company, shares were issued several times in the following years. In 2003, the venture capital firm Richardson Ventures Inc. acquired shares in the company. As a result, the company's management was completely replaced. In 2004, the US subsidiary Railpower Hybrid Technologies Corp. was founded. based in Erie . In 2006, locomotives with low-emission genset diesel engines were presented as a further production line . With these vehicles, the most successful series to date was created. This is also because the hybrid models produced up to the beginning of 2006 caught fire. The locomotives were therefore recalled in mid-2007 to check them and bring them up to date with the latest technology. The hybrid drive has now also been modified as an energy generator for gantry cranes . In early February 2009, the company was filed for bankruptcy proceedings in Canada and the United States, and in early May the RJ Corman Railroad Group acquired the assets.
Vehicle production
172 locomotives had been built by mid-August 2007. Since Railpower does not have its own workshops, the production orders are given to other companies. Locomotives, for example, are manufactured at Alstom in Calgary , Canadian Allied Diesel in Montreal , Super Steel in Schenectady and in the workshops of Norfolk Southern Railway and Railserve (after delivery of the relevant kits) .
The locomotives are not completely new builds. The reconditioned frames from the EMD GP series or comparable GE products are used for the vehicles . The drive unit and the newly manufactured engine casing as well as the driver's cab are then placed on top.
