Raimondo Selli (born September 30, 1916 in Bologna , † October 4, 1983 ibid) was an Italian geologist and oceanographer.

Selli studied geology in Bologna and was an assistant there after graduating from the Laurea from 1940 to 1954. After his habilitation in 1954, he taught for two years at the University of Palermo and was professor in Bologna from 1957.

At his institute he promoted stratigraphic research in connection with oil exploration and in 1968 he established the first Italian institute for marine geology with the support of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche. In 1970 he led a ship expedition to explore the Tyrrhenian Sea. He dealt with earthquake risks, for example with regard to a bridge over the Strait of Messina and nuclear power plants, studied the Vajont landslide and dealt with the tectonic development of the Eastern and Southern Alps. He also dealt with the Messinian salinity crisis . An oceanic anoxic event of the Aptium is named after him (Selli event).

He was an honorary doctor of the University of Bordeaux, a member of the Accademia dei Lincei and the academies in Bologna and Turin.

From 1967 to 1980 he was the representative of Italy at the UN for oceanographic and maritime problems. The Institute of Geology and Paleontology in Bologna has been named after Selli since 1988. 1962/63 he was president of the Società Geologica Italiana.
