Rainer Schnell

Rainer Schnell (born August 8, 1957 in Witten ) is a German social scientist, professor at the City University London and holder of the chair for "social scientific methods / empirical social research" in the social sciences department at the University of Duisburg-Essen .

Life

Rainer Schnell studied social sciences with a focus on the theory of science, methods and statistics and graduated in 1982 from the Ruhr University in Bochum . There he received his doctorate in 1986 on the subject of missing data problems in empirical social research . His habilitation took place in 1996 at the University of Mannheim on the subject of nonresponse in population surveys . He was employed as a research assistant at the University of Cologne from 1987 to 1988. Schnell was a university assistant at the University of Cologne from 1988 to 1991 and from 1991 to 1997 a university assistant for sociology and science at the University of Mannheim. From 1996 to 1997 Schnell was a representative of a C3 professorship at the University of Konstanz. From 1997 to 2008 he was professor for "Methods of Empirical Political and Administrative Research" at the University of Konstanz. Since 2008 he has been a professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen . On April 1, 2015, Schnell accepted a position at City University London . He is on leave at the University of Duisburg-Essen, but still holds the chair for empirical social research.

Schnell's research is primarily aimed at studying the problems of statistical data analysis. The non-response problem in survey research represents a special focus . Another focus is work on record linkage .
