Rainer Sontowski (born April 15, 1959 in Barntrup ) is a journalist and political scientist as well as a former State Secretary . D.

Life

education

Rainer Sontowski began studying Political Science and Middle and New History at the University of Hanover in 1981, graduating in 1987 with a Magister Artium. In 1989 he was promoted to Dr. phil. is doing his doctorate with a dissertation "The farmers' association in crisis: A contribution to the political-scientific redefinition of group collective behavior". In it he made a theoretical redefinition of peasant association policy against the background of the corporatism debate.

Career history

After lecturing in the German Bundestag and the Lower Saxony State Parliament from 1987 to 1994, Rainer Sontowski moved to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Education, where he became head of the ministerial office. During this time, a close contact with Sigmar Gabriel developed. In 1999 he became head of the "Political Planning in the Chief BK Working Group " in the Federal Chancellery at Bodo Hombach . Six months later, Sontowski took over the management of the offices of the then SPD chairman Gerhard Schröder in the SPD party executive in the Willy Brandt House until 2002. In 2003 he became the SPD parliamentary group manager in the Lower Saxony state parliament. From 2003 to 2005 he was head of the "Press and Public Relations" department in the Federal Government's Press and Information Office . In 2005 he moved to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety , where under Sigmar Gabriel he headed the department "Central Department, Fundamental Matters of Environmental Protection" from 2005 to 2009. When Sigmar Gabriel was elected chairman of the SPD party, Rainer Sontowski again took over the leadership of the chairman's office in the Willy Brandt House.

Career as State Secretary

In January 2014, Sigmar Gabriel appointed him State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy . Together with Sigmar Gabriel, he changed to the same function in the Foreign Office in January 2017 . Sontowski also headed the Vice Chancellery in both federal ministries. That means he coordinated the work of the SPD-led ministries among themselves as well as with the federal states and the Federal Chancellery. At the beginning of 2018, Sontowski participated in the coalition negotiations between the SPD, CDU and CSU. In the books "Turn of Time in World Politics", "New Measurements" and "Rethinking Links" Rainer Sontowski is thanked by Sigmar Gabriel for his significant contribution to the writings. In the book "More courage! Departure into a new decade" Sigmar Gabriel thanks again for Rainer Sontowski's significant contribution and describes him as a "friend and companion." On March 22, 2018, Rainer Sontowski was retired from work by the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs at a ceremony in the Weltsaal of the Federal Foreign Office . Since then he has been working as a freelance consultant, writer and ghostwriter in Berlin.
