Rainer Widmann (born July 25, 1967 in Freistadt ) is an Austrian politician ( BZÖ , formerly FPÖ ) and business economist . Widmann was a member of the Austrian National Council from 2008 to 2013 .

education and profession

Widmann attended elementary school in Freistadt from 1973 to 1977 and then until 1981 the Marianum secondary school in Freistadt. In 1981 he moved to the Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium in Bad Leonfelden , where he passed the Matura in 1985 . From 1986, Widmann studied business administration at the Johannes Kepler University Linz and graduated in 1994 with the academic degree Magister . Widmann did his military service between 1985 and 1986 as a one-year volunteer with the Austrian Armed Forces .

During his studies, Widmann worked in the Freedom State Parliament Club in Upper Austria from 1992 to 1997, and in 1997 was promoted to office manager for then Regional Councilor Ursula Haubner . Since 2003 he has been the chief official of the environmental protection department at the state of Upper Austria and was appointed court advisor in 2005 .

politics

Widmann has been a councilor in the city of Freistadt since 1991 and was a councilor between 2001 and 2003. Between 1999 and 2005 he held the function of city party chairman of the FPÖ Freistadt and between 2002 and 2005 he was district party chairman of the FPÖ Freistadt. In addition, Widmann was a member of the Upper Austrian State School Council between 2003 and 2005. Widmann switched from the FPÖ to the BZÖ in the course of the split and has been the regional spokesman for the BZÖ Upper Austria since 2006. He ran for the National Council in the 2008 National Council election and was sworn in on October 28, 2008 as a member of the Upper Austrian constituency. In the BZÖ parliamentary club, Widmann took on the role of area spokesman for energy, research and displaced persons. After the National Council election in 2013, Widmann lost his seat in parliament because the BZÖ failed to join the National Council. In 2020 he was a representative of the WIFF list in the municipality of Freistadt.
