Raitahu
The Raitahu in the south of East Timor |
The Raitahu ( Tetum , German mud land , in the local Tetum Terik : Rai Sut ) is a mud volcano in the East Timorese Suco Uma Uain Craic ( municipality of Viqueque ). It is located east of the Cuha River , three kilometers from the sea.
At the end of the 19th century Arthur Wichmann reported about a mud volcano near Bibiluto , in the plain of "Raisute". It is said to have had five small and two large craters and erupted four times in May 1857 and between 1870 and 1879. He threw out "water and bituminous substances under the appearance of fire". The water flowed into the nearby Cuha. Before the eruptions, there were earthquakes that drove people in the area from their huts. The mud volcano is still active today. For example, it had an eruption in August 2018, with the southwest flank sliding towards the river.
