Ralf Otterpohl

Ralf Otterpohl (born September 26, 1958 in Herford ) is a German urban water economist and conspiracy theorist .

Scientific career

After an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and studying civil engineering at RWTH Aachen University , Otterpohl completed his doctorate on dynamic sewage treatment plant simulation at the Institute for Urban Water Management in Aachen. He then founded his own engineering office in Lübeck, which specializes in the computer simulation of sewage treatment plants and the development of ecological wastewater and sanitary concepts . In the area of new wastewater concepts , the new wastewater treatment system he developed was implemented for the first time in Lübeck in the new housing estate Flintenbreite , in which the fecal wastewater concentrated thanks to vacuum toilets is treated anaerobically .

Since 1998 Otterpohl has been Professor and Head of the Institute for Wastewater Management and Water Protection at the Technical University of Hamburg . The focus of his research is on innovative wastewater concepts. The goal is the cost-effective use of the wastewater constituents as fertilizer . The starting point is the differentiated treatment of different partial flows of the wastewater (especially black water and gray water ). These investigations are not based solely on Central Europe, but on different climatic and social conditions worldwide.

At the same time, he is working on competitive processes to increase the efficiency of industrial wastewater management with the aim of reusing water and ingredients. The current research includes the production of electricity, heat / cold and charcoal for permanent humus with biochar composting or wood gas cooker. The wastewater sector is currently being developed internationally under the name "Terra Preta Sanitation". In addition to the high-tech systems for particularly resource-efficient new development areas, the project focus is on rural development. Otterpohl has been teaching "rural development" for international students for over ten years. From this he developed the concept of the entrepreneurial villages “New Village in the Garden Ring”, for which the first publications and a new subject were created.

Otterpohl published around 300 scientific publications and, as a pioneer of ecological sewage systems, initiated many projects, particularly in the Netherlands and China. The current work on rural development follows on from research on the production of humus substrates and soil improvers from wastewater constituents, especially black water. He sees the preservation and restoration of a biologically stable topsoil as the most important prerequisite for securing the water supply, the food supply and as a contribution to maintaining or restoring a stable local climate.

Esoteric

Otterpohl is considered a representative of conspiracy theories. He claimed to the magazine Kontraste that the existence of chemtrails was scientifically proven. Furthermore, in a lecture at the New Horizons esoteric fair, he said that chemtrails fill “people with aluminum ” so that they react more strongly to mobile phone radiation and are thus easier to make “crazy”.

Otterpohl also does not believe in the effect of carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas . In a course he offered students € 2,000 if they had “a good explanation for the miracle that this chemically boring trace gas can probably cause”.

Otterpohl is close to the Anastasia movement . However, he distances himself from anti-Semitic and other extremist attitudes of some members. In February 2020, the student parliament of the Technical University of Hamburg asked him not to spread conspiracy theories in his courses.
