Ralf Zank

Ralf Zank (* 1960 in Templin ) is a trombonist, member of the Staatskapelle Berlin under Daniel Barenboim and co-founder and active member of the Berlin Trombone Quintet . As an amateur, he is a successful sailor with his wife and sons.

Life

Musician

After attending school, Ralf Zank studied trombone with Jürgen Heinel from 1981 to 1985 at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin . After successfully completing his studies, he was hired as assistant solo trombonist at the Great Radio Orchestra Berlin . Since 1987 he has been a member of the Staatskapelle Berlin .

Together with his fellow students Wilfried Helm, Thomas Richter, Jens-Peter Erbe and Jörg Lehmann, he founded the Trombone Quintet Berlin (PQB) in 1982 . Her repertoire is broad and includes chamber music , baroque music , contemporary music and light music. Due to a “cultivated way of playing” and also because of the unique cast (alto trombone, 2 tenor trombones, bass trombone, tuba), the PQB quickly won the audience's approval. Radio, television, and record companies got them recordings in studios and performances at concerts. In the summer of 1986 the musicians took part in the Third International Brass Chamber Music Competition in Barcs (Hungary) and won a prize and a diploma. From 1987 to 1989 the quintet was in the chamber music master class with Ludwig Güttler in Dresden. This resulted in another close collaboration between the PQB and the brass ensemble Ludwig Güttler .

Even after the fall of the Berlin Wall , the five musicians were able to perform successfully and expand their tours to Europe and Asia. They took part in various international festivals and gave well-attended solo concerts. Her fame was increased through appearances on radio and television, for example in the ZDF program "Sommergarten" (2009).

The other members of the PQB also have engagements in large orchestras.

Leisure and family

In his free time, Ralf Zank is a hobby sailor. As a member of the Wandlitzer sailing club eV he learned to sail. He is now a member of the board of this association. His wife and sons are also members. The sons train and manage the youth department. As a member of the ITCA (International Topcat Class Association) he has been competing quite successfully with the catamaran ( Topcat K2) for several years : 2008 European Championship Podersdorf (Austria) 3rd place, 2009 Worlds Punt Ala (Italy) 3rd place, 2010 Störtebeker Euro Stralsund (Germany) 1st place, 2011 Worlds Traunsee (Austria) 1st place, 2012 European Championship Lake Como (Italy) 2nd place, 2014 Worlds Neusiedler See (Austria) 2nd place.

Ralf Zank lives in Panketal.
