Ralf Zils (born May 25, 1969 ) is a former German soccer player and later coach who was once on the pitch for MSV Duisburg in the 2nd Bundesliga.

Player career

Beginnings at MSV Duisburg (1987–1990)

The defender Zils grew up in Mülheim an der Ruhr and came to MSV Duisburg as a youth, which is based in the neighboring city . At the traditional club, which was relegated to the third-class Oberliga Nordrhein in 1986, he came into the focus of the first team's coach Detlef Pirsig in 1987 . On June 21, the 18-year-old received his trust and was substituted on in the 88th minute of the final of the German amateur championship against the second team of FC Bayern Munich with a 2-1 intermediate result for two-time goalscorer Michael Tönnies . He served to stabilize the defensive, witnessed how Uwe Kober increased up to 4: 1 and was able to celebrate the title win.

Despite the success, the MSV had to continue to compete in the league. Zils was regularly called up and was considered a perspective player, but could not fight for a regular place. At the end of the 1988/89 season, the longed-for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga was successful. From then on, the 20-year-old was officially a professional, but at the same time his chances of further appearances decreased. On October 1, 1989, he made his debut in the second division when he was substituted on in a 2-1 win against Hannover 96 in the 89th minute. The few minutes he then spent on the pitch were his only ones in the professional field. Because he no longer had any prospects at MSV, he switched to the upper division black and white Essen in 1990 .

Amateur at Schwarz-Weiß Essen and in Mülheim (1990–2002)

While he had played with prominent footballers like Ewald Lienen in Duisburg , he immediately became an important pillar of the team at Schwarz-Weiß after his move. From 1994 the club was only fourth class due to the restructuring of the league system. Nevertheless, he stayed there and took part in the league operations until he said goodbye in 1999 and returned to his hometown with the move to TuS Union 09 Mülheim . In 2002, at the age of 33, he stopped playing football for good.

Coaching career

In 2006 he took over the amateur team of SC Werden-Heidhausen , which he surprisingly managed to lead to the Essen city championship in January 2008. In 2011 he moved back to his home country again when he was employed by Mülheimer SV 07 . He immediately led this from the district to the state league and was initially successful until the team got off to a bad start in the 2013/14 season and he was then dismissed in October 2013. In 2014 he was committed to the same position by local rivals TSV Heimaterde Mülheim .
