Ralph Gleis (born August 9, 1973 in Münster , Westphalia ) is a German art historian and has been director of the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin since 2017 . His research focus is on the art of the 19th century and classical modernism , on which he has published numerous articles and catalog articles.

Life

Ralph Gleis studied art history, history and sociology at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster, the Università degli Studi di Bologna and the University of Cologne , where he completed his dissertation on the modern history picture in 2008 in the subject of art history. After working at the German Historical Museum in Berlin, at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp and at the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn, Gleis was curator at the Wien Museum from 2009 to 2017 . The focus of his curatorial work there were exhibitions on art of the 19th and 20th centuries, for example on Biedermeier painting (2009), on the Viennese painter Hans Makart (2011) or on art from the interwar period (2016), but also on cultural-historical topics such as the Vienna World Exhibition (2014).

Since May 2017 Ralph Gleis has succeeded Philipp Demandt as director of the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin .
