Rama (people)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rama are an indigenous people in Nicaragua .

Culture

The approximately 900 Rama live from hunting, fishing and growing bananas and white cocoa . The language of the Rama belongs to the family of the Chibcha languages . It is almost extinct and only about two dozen elderly people are fluent in it. The loss of the language in favor of an English- based Creole is due, among other things, to the arrival of missionaries from the evangelical Moravian Church (Moravian Church) in the middle of the 19th century.

Political situation

The Rama have long been in a dispute with the Nicaraguan government over the US company plans to build a railway line called Canal Seco , which will run through the Rama area. Some designs for the Nicaragua Canal also run through their territory. In addition, the Rama defend themselves against the speculative transactions of foreign corporations , which threaten to deprive them of their traditional rights of use. As a result, there were also violent riots.
