Rami Anis ( Arabic رامي أنيس, DMG Rāmī Anīs ; * March 18, 1991 in Aleppo ) is a Syrian swimming athlete who took part in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro for the Refugee Olympic Athletes team.

life and career

Rami Anis was born on March 18, 1991 in the Syrian city of Aleppo and continued the career of his uncle Majad, who also represented his home country as a swimming athlete. After he trained as a competitive athlete in Syria from the age of 14, his parents sent him to Istanbul with his older brother in the turmoil of the civil war in Syria in 2011 . The two were to spend a few months there for the time being and then return to their homeland. In Turkey he trained in the swimming department of Galatasaray Istanbul , but because of his lack of Turkish citizenship, he had no prospect of appearing in official competitions. However, as the situation in Syria worsened significantly and a return home was hopeless, Anis fled to the Greek island of Samos in a rubber dinghy . His further journey finally brought him to Belgium, where he was granted asylum in December 2015 . In Belgium he joined the Royal Ghent Swimming Club from Gent , where he has been trained by the former Olympic swimmer Carine Verbauwen ever since . In June 2016, the IOC named Anis as one of ten refugees who could compete for the Refugee Olympic Athletes team at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro . There he competed over 100 meters freestyle and 100 meters butterfly .
