Daniel Buess (born January 28, 1976 in Basel ; † March 10, 2016 there ) was a Swiss drummer , percussionist and experimental musician.
biography
Buess studied drums at the Basel University of Music with Siegfried Schmid and with Isao Nakamura at the Karlsruhe University of Music . His studies included the traditional South Indian percussion, especially the mridangam from 1995 to 1998 as well as the Arabic percussion, which he dealt with during his three-month stay in Cairo , Egypt from November 2007 to January 2008. He taught drums and percussion at the Basel Music Academy for several years . In 1998 he received the Riehen Culture Prize.
Buess was active in various groups and ensembles. He played a key role in Ensemble Phoenix Basel : He was a core and founding member as well as solo drummer of this ensemble, which is well-known beyond the borders of Switzerland. In addition, he played in other formations with various musicians, including Cortex (with the composer, saxophonist and electronics player Alex Buess ), 16-17 , Buggatronic (with James Hullick), How 2 (with the percussionist Daniel Stalder), B & B (with the flautist Christoph Bösch), Mir (with Marco Papiro and Michael Zaugg) and Noise Zone (with Artur and Sebastian Smolyn). He worked with Zbigniew Karkowski, John Duncan, Alex Buess , Hany Bedair, Jürg Henneberger, Michael Wertmüller , Phill Niblock , Knut Remond, Z'EV, Julio Estrada , Antoine Chessex , Volker Heyn , Thomas Lauck , Tim Hodgkinson , Marco Papiro, Iancu Dumitrescu , Ana-Maria Avram , Jérôme Noetinger .
His drumming and music were of great intensity and energy, at times archaic, but always very differentiated and varied. Buess made extensive use of self-made instruments: electronic rattles, percussive string instruments and skin instruments modified by electronic accessories.
On his concert tours through Europe , Asia and Australia he played at festivals such as the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (2015), the Lucerne Festival , and the Warsaw Autumn . He has also performed at various underground festivals and independent concert venues. In 2010 he organized the Echo Festival in Belgrade, which was subsequently documented with a book and a CD. In November 2011 he curated and organized the festival Terrains: Jolt Swiss Australian Festival. This event was also documented on vinyl and CD.
