At the beginning of the MAB, the General Music School was founded on February 8, 1867 on the initiative of the Basel orphan father Johann Jakob Schäublin-Vögtlin and the Society for the Good and the Charitable Basel .

The first director was Selmar Bagge from 1868 to 1896, then the composer Hans Huber was artistic director of the Allgemeine Musikschule from 1896 to 1918, and Heinrich Zickendraht was in charge of the administration . In 1954, the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, founded by Paul Sacher in 1933, was merged with the General Music School and the University of Music. All three institutes together have since formed the Music Academy of the City of Basel. In 2001 the basic musical courses were introduced as the fourth institute.
