Tim Hodgkinson (born May 1, 1949 in Salisbury ) is an English musician ( saxophone , clarinet , piano , guitar ) and composer who is known as one of the founders of the art rock group Henry Cow and in the field of experimental rock and improvisation music .

Live and act

Hodgkinson grew up in Wiltshire and studied music anthropology at Cambridge University (graduated in 1971). In 1968 he founded the Henry Cow group with Fred Frith , which existed until 1979. After their dissolution, he published The Henry Cow Book with Chris Cutler in 1981 .

In 1980 he founded the band The Work together with guitarist Bill Gilonis, bassist Mick Hobbs and drummer Rick Wilson , which initially lasted until 1982 and revived in 1989. Together with Catherine Jauniaux , they recorded Slow Crimes in 1982 . With Gilonis he founded the independent label Woof Records , where this record appeared. He also played with Momes or with the jazz core project God .

Together with Scottish percussionist Ken Hyder , with whom he performed in a duo since 1978, he made from 1990 toured Siberia to shamanistic explore traditions. With the overtone singer Gendos Chamzyryn from Tuva they finally formed the trio K-Space , which played in Altay villages in 1998 and has existed ever since.

Hodgkinson also plays new improvisational music with Konk Pack ; In addition to him, the Cologne electronics technician Thomas Lehn and the drummer Roger Turner belong to the project that has been in existence since 1997.

Hodgkinson has also released several solo albums, some of which are improvised in nature ( e.g. Splutter 1986), but also contain compositions by him, such as his String Quartet 1 for classical string quartet . His album Sketch of Now contains three compositions for the Romanian Hyperion Ensemble (partly conducted by Iancu Dumitrescu ) and three compositions on which Hodgkinson himself can be heard on different instruments. In addition, he has played with many other musicians, repeatedly with Fred Frith, Chris Cutler, but also with Lol Coxhill , Tom Cora , Lindsay Cooper , John Zorn , Evan Parker , Catherine Jauniaux and Dagmar Krause .

Hodgkinson also works as a musicologist.
