God was a British experimental metal band from London that was formed in 1987 and broke up in 1996.

history

The band was formed in 1987 by Kevin Martin after he was contacted by Mark E. Smith to guest contributing to a compilation by his band The Fall , called Disparate Cognescenti . Martin's main musical partner was Shane Rogan. Both then decided to found God together, with Martin taking over the vocals and playing the tenor saxophone while Rogan took over the electric guitar. For the rest of the 1980s, the line-up around the duo was in constant change. Martin also ran the Mule Club in London , where God could perform together with Napalm Death and Godflesh . Guitarist Justin Broadrick , who previously worked for Napalm Death and later founded Godflesh, produced the EP Breach Birth , which was released in 1990 on Situation Two Records . Broadrick officially joined God a short time later. He was also active in many other music projects with Martin. God then expanded to a project that consisted of nine members. Martin's own label Pathological Records released the live album Loco in 1991 . With Possession followed Virgin Records in 1992, the first studio album, before another live album was released in 1993 under the name Consumed on Sentrax Records . In 1994 the studio album The Anatomy of Addiction was released , which was followed by the remix EP Appeal to Human Greed in 1995. In 1996 the group disbanded.

style

According to Allmusic's Ned Raggett , the band at Loco combines free jazz from the 1970s and 1980s with heavy metal . According to Robert Müller from Metal Hammer , the band on The Anatomy of Addiction is a "less melodic, rhythm-oriented and jazzed variant" of Godflesh. The music is also bulky, but intense.
