Ramnagar is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh . The city is located on the banks of the Ganges and is directly across from Varanasi .
The city is part of the Varanasi district . Ramnagar has the status of Nagar Palika Parishad . The city is divided into 24 wards . It had a total of 49,132 inhabitants on the cut-off date of the 2011 census, of which 26,071 were men and 23,061 women. Hindus form the largest group of the city's population with a share of over 75%, followed by Muslims with over 23%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 79.92%.
Ramnagar has a fortress called the Ramnagar Fort that is still the residence of the King of Varanasi (Benares).
