Ramses train station
The Ramses train station ( Arabic محطة رمسيس Maḥaṭṭat Ramsīs , DMG Maḥaṭṭat Ramsīs , English Ramses Railway Station ) is the main train station of the Egyptian capital Cairo .
The station is located on Ramses Square ( Mīdān Ramsīs ), from which the name of the station is derived. The Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II was one of the most important rulers of early Egypt and his statue has long formed the center of Ramses Square . Near the train station is the Al-Shohadaa metro station . It is the intersection of lines 1 and 2 of the Cairo Metro . The Egyptian Railway Museum is located in an extension of the station .
history
The first main train station in Cairo was called Misr-Bahnhof ( Maḥaṭṭat Miṣr ). It was created in 1856 for the Cairo – Alexandria railway line . The present station building was built in 1892 and rebuilt in 1955.
The statue of Ramses II. At the adjacent Midan Ramsis was in 1955 by the Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser in front of the main train station translocated . On August 25, 2006, it was again moved to another place, to the new Grand Egyptian Museum near the pyramids of Giza .
Fire 2019
On February 27, 2019, a locomotive collided with a bumper at the end of a busy platform. As a result, a fire broke out in this area of the train station, with a petrol tank also exploding. At least 25 people died and over 50 were injured in the fire. The police then cleared the entire train station and the Ramses Square in front of it . A few hours after the accident, the Egyptian Transport Minister Hisham Arafat resigned.
