Randall "Randy" David Shughart (born August 13, 1958 in Newville , Pennsylvania , † October 3, 1993 in Mogadishu ) was an American first class sergeant in the US Army and most recently served in the Delta Force . He was killed in Somalia in 1993 during the Battle of Mogadishu . He is one of the few American soldiers to have received the Medal of Honor , the highest honor for bravery of the American armed forces , since the end of the Vietnam War .

Military career

Shughart, a sniper of the Delta Force, died in a battle in Operation Gothic Serpent in Mogadishu as he tried, along with his comrades Gary Gordon a downed MH-60 "Black Hawk" and the injured pilot, Michael Durant against To defend vastly outnumbered Somali militias. Shughart and Gordon asked for this assignment several times, although no further assistance was expected and both were only armed with one sniper rifle and one pistol each. The crash site was overrun and both soldiers were killed. Their naked bodies were then dragged through the streets of Mogadishu and desecrated. The crashed pilot was captured and released eleven days later. Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon received the highest military honor in the United States for their volunteer work : the Medal of Honor . You were the first to receive this award ( posthumously ) since the Vietnam War .

USS Shughart

The US Navy named the transport ship (LMSR) USS Shughart after him in 1997 .
