The Rannasee is a reservoir on the Ranna near Wegscheid in the Lower Bavarian district of Passau on the border with Austria .

Since 1967, plans were made in the Wegscheid district to create a swimming lake to promote tourism and local recreation. After a long planning period, the first groundbreaking took place in September 1977 three kilometers southwest of Wegscheid. Since part of the lake was supposed to be on Austrian territory, it was necessary to conclude a state treaty between the Federal Republic of Germany and Austria.

In 1979 the district council decided to take precautionary measures to keep the possibility of building a power station open. In times of need, a power plant located here could supply the entire Passau district with 400,000 to 500,000 kilowatt hours.

On June 3, 1983, the Rannasee including the recreation center was officially opened. The costs for the new recreation area amounted to 15 million DM. It can be easily reached via the federal highway 388 . The construction of the reservoir cost 6.4 million DM. Even then, you could cross the border within a tourist zone without border police and customs. The lake reaches its greatest depth at the dam at eight and a half meters. Love Island is in the middle of Lake Ranna.

In addition to the beach, numerous facilities are available for recreational activities, including an adventure playground, outdoor play areas, tennis plates, curling rink, pedal boats, children's paddling pool, animal enclosure and a 120-meter-long water slide. In the central building there is an inn, sanitary facilities and changing facilities.

Despite the construction of sewage pipes and a biological sewage treatment plant, there were repeated problems with water pollution control, which not least affected the Austrian neighboring communities, into which the Ranna flows. The construction of a new sewage treatment plant began in spring 2009.
