Raoul Pleskow

Raoul Pleskow (born October 12, 1931 in Vienna ) is an American composer and music teacher of Austrian origin.

Life

Pleskow was born to the Jewish couple Leo Pleskow (* 1907) and Frieda Herz (* 1905). His father came from Sevastopol and worked as a high school teacher and violinist; the mother came from Vienna. After the National Socialist " Anschluss of Austria ", he and his parents fled to New York via Switzerland and France in 1939. In 1945 he became an American citizen. He attended the Juilliard School of Music from 1950 to 1952 and then studied at Queens College with Karol Rathaus . In 1956 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and then studied composition at Columbia University with Otto Luening , from where he graduated in 1959 with a Master of Arts .

He then took private lessons with Stefan Wolpe and began teaching in 1961 at the Wolpe-led music department at Long Island University's CW Post College . He succeeded him as head of the music department and was professor of music there from 1970 until his retirement in 1994. He then remained associated with the college as composer in residence .

Pleskow wrote for symphonic and chamber music ensembles, as well as choral and solo works. His works were u. a. Cleveland Orchestra, Tanglewood Festival Orchestra , Plainfield Symphony , Orchestra da Camera , South Dakota Symphony , Pierrot Consort , Stony Brook Contemporary Chamber Players, and Queens Symphony Orchestra .

For his compositions he has received the Composers Forum Award (1963), prizes from the Ford Foundation (1972), the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund for Music (1972), the New York State Council on the Arts (1974), the National Endowment for the Arts (1974, 1975, 1978) from the National Institute of Arts and Letters (1974), the Guggenheim Foundation (1977) and Long Island University (1978).
