Rapülők

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rapülők was a Hungarian pop-rap trio that, with its success in the 1990s, was one of the most successful representatives of rap in Hungary.

Band history

The three musicians Péter Geszti, Gábor Berkes and Gábor Szentmihályi already knew each other from the large pop band Első Emelet , which was successful in the 1980s. In 1992 they joined forces and recorded an album in which Geszti appeared as a singer and rapper. In doing so, they orientated themselves on the pop music of the late 80s and 90s, mixed with rap. Besides Áj láv jú (= I Love You), her most popular pieces include the Hungarian version of Holiday Rap by MC Miker G & Deejay Sven . They were known above all for their entertaining and humorous stage appearances.

Like the band, the album was called Rapülők and in September 1992 it topped the Hungarian album charts . With a break of two weeks it held first place up to and including February 1993 and holds the record in Hungary with 22 number one weeks. Almost a year after the debut, the second album followed with Rapeta and again they climbed to number one. The trio occupied the top position for a further 12 weeks until the turn of the year into 1994. In total, Rapülők sold over half a million copies of both albums and earned two platinum awards .

Despite the great success, the musicians did not want to continue the project and dissolved it that same year. In the sports arena of Budapest they gave four sold out farewell concerts. The three members dedicated themselves to other projects, for example Geszti became a member of Jazz + Az , which also produced very successful albums.

However, the idea of reunification persisted and twelve years after the separation all three found time to reunite for an album. It's called Riszájkling (= recycling) and consists of new recordings of old songs, all in different styles such as swing, latin, reggae, disco and numetal. Above all, it was the shows in the sports arena that attracted fans, but the album also made it to number one again in early 2006 and achieved gold status.

Ten years later another best-of album by the rap trio was released. This compilation also reached the top of the chart.
