Rapeman was an American noise rock / post hardcore band.

It consisted of Steve Albini ( Big Black , Shellac ), David Wm. Sims and Rey Washam (both former members of Scratch Acid ). The provocative name Rapeman, Engl. According to Albini, "rapist" comes from the Japanese comic The Rapeman , in which the title character uses rape to enforce justice. Washam and Albini were so amazed that such a comic should be tolerated in a modern society like Japan's that they named the band after the anti-hero of the comic.

At the band's concerts there were often protests, the band made fun of rape and violence against women and approved them. Albini calls this criticism idiotic and argues that the punk scene is generally positive towards feminism.

In 1989 Rapeman broke up. Albini remained active as an (independent) music producer and founded the band Shellac in 1992 . Sims found himself back together with ex-Scratch Acid singer David Yow , with whom he formed the band The Jesus Lizard .
