The Raschkäfer or sandpiper ( Elaphrus ) are a genus of beetles from the family of ground beetles (Carabidae) within the subfamily Elaphrinae . It occurs in Europe with eleven species and subspecies, five are also native to Central Europe.

The medium-sized beetles are somewhat similar to tiger beetles , but are significantly smaller. Her head is large, the compound eyes protrude from the side. The pronotum is heart-shaped. The upper wings have four rows of large, flat, often blue or green colored mirror spots, between which the space is structured in dense punctiform fashion.
The larvae have a longitudinal keel on their head, which is pulled forward to form a horn. This makes them look similar to the larvae of the genus Omophron , but differ from them by their short legs on which the tarsi have two claws.
Occurrence and way of life
The diurnal adults are very fast runners and live on muddy water banks and in damp floodplains. The larvae are nocturnal. They mostly overwinter as adults.
