Rasheed Araeen

Rasheed Araeen (* 1935 in Karachi ) is a Pakistani- British painter and sculptor .

life and work

Araeen studied civil engineering in Pakistan and worked in Karachi for several years in his learned profession. As an autodidact , he created ink pictures, e.g. B. the Hula Hoop series (1959–1961), sketches, photographs and minimalist sculptures. In 1964 Rasheed Araeen left Pakistan and moved to London. There he began to make formal, geometric sculptures. In 1972 Rasheed Araeen joined the British Black Panther movement and founded the art magazines Black Phoenix (1978), Third Text (1987) and Third Text Asia (2008).

In 2014 the exhibition Rasheed Araeen: Before and After Minimalism / Rasheed Araeen: Before and After Minimalism took place at the Sharjah Art Foundation in Sharjah . In 2017 Rasheed Araeen participated in documenta 14 in Kassel. In 2018 the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven showed a comprehensive retrospective .
