Tom Lemke

Thomas "Tom" Lemke (born February 10, 1960 in Hof ; † April 8, 2017 in Berlin ) was a German photographer .

Life

Lemke gained his first professional experience as a photo assistant for the Munich photographer Blacky Grill. Between 1980 and 1989 Lemke worked as a freelance photographer in Hamburg, including for stern , the Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit . In 1989 he worked with the photographer Jeanloup Sieff . Until 1991, Lemke worked as the creative director of zero art publishing house. From 1990 to 1995 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Markus Lüpertz , whose master class he was in 1995 and personal assistant from 1996. After graduating, Lemke received photo assignments for brands such as Nivea andHugo Boss . In 2001 he toured the United States of America , where his water series was created. In 2002 he toured China with the artist Jörg Immendorff , where he developed his abstract Shanghai series . He later experimented with the photography of Rauch in Berlin.

From his one-year relationship with the Düsseldorf actress Claudelle Deckert , a daughter was born in 1997. In April 2017 Tom Lemke died after a long illness at the age of 57 in Berlin.

Tom Lemke was particularly known for his photographs of celebrities, whom he portrayed with a black background, dark clothing and a serious look. Lemke's works are represented in the Fusion Gallery of the Association for Photography and Media Art, Düsseldorf. Since 2014, some of Lemke's pictures have been part of a permanent public exhibition in the rooms of the Berlin Living Bauhaus Foundation . The Krefeld SuMu - Museum for Contemporary Surrealism showed works by the artist.
