life and work

Masharawi was born in the Shati refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. He is considered the only filmmaker who “... worked in Palestine and described life in the camps in documentaries and feature films” in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1996 Rashid Masharawi founded the Cinema Production Center in Ramallah to produce local films there. Thanks to the mobile cinema funded by Masharawi, he enables film screenings in Palestinian refugee camps. In this context he made the film “Ticket to Jerusalem”, which shows the laborious work of a mobile projectionist through the occupied Palestinian territories to Jerusalem. The European premiere of the film took place in 2002 as part of the documenta11 film program .

In 2002 Masharawi made the film “Checkpoint”, which consists of a single 50-minute shot and slowly observes the people waiting on the Palestinian side of the Kalandia checkpoint between Ramallah and Jerusalem. At dOCUMENTA (13) he showed (together with Khaled Hourani ) the 52-minute film Picasso in Palestine , which shows the transport of the Picasso painting Buste de Femme (1943) from the Dutch Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven to Ramallah in the Palestinian West Bank , where it was exhibited at the International Art Academy Palestine (IAAP) in 2011 .

“Some try to create a Palestinian situation with the means of the cinema. What I'm trying to do is to make a cinema out of the Palestinian situation. "
