Khaled Hourani

Khaled Hourani (* 1965 in Hebron ) is a Palestinian concept and installation artist , exhibition curator and art critic , as well as founding director of the International Academy of Art in Palestine.

life and work

Khaled Hourani founded the Al Matal Gallery in Ramallah in 1997 . He was a designer at Al Karmel Magazine, founded by Mahmoud Darwish . Hourani was Director General of the Fine Arts Department of the Palestinian Ministry of Culture from 2004 to 2006

Picasso in Palestine is a project that Houranirealizedin collaboration with the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven . In June 2011, Pablo Picasso's original painting Buste de Femme (1943), which is part of the Van Abbemuseum's collection, was transported from Eindhoven to Ramallah, where it wasexhibitedat the International Academy of Art for three weeks. What would normally have been a standard loan process between two institutions took two years (2009–2011) due to the exceptional situation in Palestine. The project raises many questions. Extensive security precautions, negotiations and restructuring in the areas of law, insurance and administration were necessary.

The director Rashid Masharawi shot the documentary Picasso in Palestine together with Khaled Hourani , which was shown at dOCUMENTA (13) . Amjad Ghannam, imprisoned at the time, sent a postcard with a drawing of the painting Buste de Femme from the Glabou central prison as his contribution to the documenta .

Hurani was the curator for the Palestinian Pavilion at the São Paulo Biennale , and the 21st Alexandria Biennale. In 2006 he was artistic advisor for Liminal Spaces . In 2013 Hourani was awarded the Leonore Annenberg Prize for Art and Social Change .
