Town Hall (Duderstadt)
The Duderstadt town hall is a listed building in Duderstadt, Lower Saxony .
history
Around 1302/1303, the two-story sandstone department store that now forms the core of the building was built . It is a two-aisled hall building with a hall on the ground floor, which is supported by round stone supports, and a citizens' hall on the upper floor, which extends over the entire level. In 1432 the original town hall building on the southeast corner was replaced by a department store extension, which housed the council chamber, archive and council wine cellar.
In the 16th century, the half-timbered floors that dominate the scene today were built. Three towers crown the north facade, gable and bay window subdivide it. A two-story arbor was built to support the north facade. In 1673/1674 a staircase to the arbor was designed with life-size figures that support the roof.
An extensive restoration between 1982 and 1987 aimed to convert the administration building into a cultural center. The historical structure of the rooms could be restored, but the facade was only externally renovated, damaged wood was only filled. When the half-timbering was to be repainted in 2000, major damage caused by rot was found. The ceiling beams were also badly damaged, and decaying beams had to be replaced. Tons of rubble were removed from the false ceilings that had been brought into the ceilings during construction work on the town hall, such as remains of sandstone from the battlements that crowned the south wing in front of the half-timbered structure.
The work is made more difficult by bat colonies in the roof structure; from March to September no construction is allowed.
The renovation is financially supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the federal government and the German Foundation for Monument Protection .
The then German Federal Post Office dedicated a stamp to the town hall in 1984 .
