Town Hall (Stargard)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The town hall in Stargard is one of the most important architectural monuments of this city in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship .

history

Around 1250 to 1280 a market hall was built in place of today's town hall. It was a single-storey building with brick walls, the outline of today's town hall. The hall also served as the city council meeting room.

At the end of the 14th century, the building was thoroughly rebuilt to become the seat of the city authorities. The Gothic building had stepped gables with screens and pointed arch windows. The western gable wall formed the main facade. The attic under the gable roof was illuminated by skylights.

The ground floor was still used by the merchants, there was also a detention room, the upper floor housed the city council, a boardroom, a courtroom and the treasury. Storage rooms for visiting merchants were built in the basement.

The town hall also fell victim to the city fire of 1540. When it was rebuilt in the transition style to the Renaissance , it received the characteristic west gable with rich tracery in stucco and the windows got curtain arches . The citizens liked the lavish decoration - two town houses with similar gables were soon built. In the following years the town hall was rebuilt and renovated several times. Its facade bears strong resemblance to the west gable of the town hall and the bishop's house in Kammin, which were built at the same time .

During the Thirty Years' War the city archive burned with the building documents. In the last months of the Second World War , the town hall suffered severe damage and burned out. The reconstruction lasted from 1948 to 1961.

When it was rebuilt in 1961, the look from the end of the 19th century was restored using old photographs. The function was adapted to the requirements of the city administration. In June 2000 the town hall received a clock in the west gable, with the dial based on the old model, but with a DCF77 radio control.

The town hall was registered on December 22nd, 1969 under no. 550 in the register of architectural monuments of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.
