The Town Hall of strokes is in the Scottish village of strokes in the Council area Aberdeenshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The building stands in a prominent position at the intersection of High Street and Bridge Street in the center of the planned town of Strichen, which Lord Strichen began in 1764 . It was built in 1816 to a design by the Aberdeen- based Scottish architect John Smith . The widow of Lord Strichen's grandson paid for the total cost of £ 2,000. The bell of the bell tower was made by Thomas Mears in 1818 . In 2011, the now-unused Town Hall was added to the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. In 2013, however, its condition was classified as good with minimal risk.

description

The town hall is stylistically reminiscent of the typical architecture of a Scottish Tolbooth from the 16th century. It is designed in a classical style, but also has Tudor Gothic details. Its masonry consists of finely crafted granite blocks that were built into layered masonry .

The elongated building has two storeys. Four arched windows are set in on the ground floor, while three tall, elongated windows with simple crowns are used on the upper floor . A contemporary painting shows that the round arches used to form an open arcade in whose niches sales stalls were set up. The facade closes with a cantilever reinforcement. A four-story bell tower adjoins the northeast side. While the openings in the upper floors are pointed arches , the main portal closes with a segmental arch at the foot . The tower is designed with cantilevered battlements and corner gouges . Above it, it is continued in an octagonal fashion and closes with a pointed helmet.
