The neo-Renaissance style town hall of Tarnowskie Góry dates from the late 19th century and is located on the Ring (Rynek 4).

history

The new town hall was built on the site of the regional court, the property of which was acquired by the magistrate under the mayor Simon Kotitschke in 1894 and demolished in the same year. Before that, the Upper Silesian Mining School was located there. The old town hall was also located elsewhere on the ring.

The new building was designed by the Charlottenburg architect Hermann Guth (1851–1924), who was already responsible for administration and church buildings in Jauer, Celle, Spandau, Plauen and Malmö. The design was determined in 1895 with the help of an architectural competition. However, it was decided to build on Guth's design instead of the winning design. The town hall in Jauer, also designed by Guth, served as a model for the Tarnowitz town hall . Both buildings are located on a street corner, have the same number of floors and the bay tower and the gable also characterize the fronts of both buildings. Construction began in 1896 under the direction of the architect Carl Benjamin Szameitke. During the construction work, the spire caught fire on November 19, 1897. On August 11, 1898, the town hall was ceremoniously opened.

In 1994 the roof was renewed and the roof turret was reconstructed, and in 2010 the facade was restored. On April 30, 1996 the building was placed under monument protection.

architecture

The building with two upper floors originally housed shops on the first floor, the municipal offices on the first floor and the mayor's apartment and the council chamber on the second floor.

The facade of the town hall was mostly clad with red bricks, decorative elements were created from Silesian granite and sandstone from Alt Warthau .

The facade decorations include numerous coats of arms that are connected to the history of Tarnowitz. These include the coat of arms of Tarnowitz , the coat of arms of the German Empire, Prussia, Silesia, the noble families Henckel von Donnersmarck and Hohenzollern . They are the work of the Berlin sculptor Matthias Carl Schilling (1851–1909).

The front was originally decorated in a niche with a figure of Georg von Hohenzollern (1484–1543), the founder of the city of Tarnowitz. This was given to the city in October 1899 by the district administrator of the Tarnowitz district and was the work of the Wroclaw sculptor Heinrich Kiesewalter. After Tarnowitz came to Poland, the sculpture was removed in 1934. A copy was put up during the German occupation, which in turn was removed in 1957. In 1958 a figure of a miner by Edward Halek from Piekary Śląskie (German Piekar) was placed there.
