Town hall in Freyburg (Unstrut)

The town hall in Freyburg (Unstrut) is a monument in the town of Freyburg (Unstrut) in the Burgenland district in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

The town hall of Freyburg (Unstrut) is located on the corner from Markt to Kirchstrasse. For centuries the main thoroughfare ran right through the city and across the market, but it has now been integrated into the square. A few meters further east is the Marienkirche .

Building history

A council is mentioned for the first time in 1410, and the town hall can also be traced back to 1425, but only presumable parts of it have survived. In 1478 a heated assembly room ( Dürnitz ) was built. After a town fire in 1551, the town hall had to be rebuilt. In the course of this reconstruction, the Dürnitz becomes a kitchen, which was probably completed in 1561, year of a building inscription, but then only existed until 1654, when lightning struck it. As a result, a separate building was built for them next to the town hall in the years 1685–1688. But this was also the result of another city fire in 1682, which made it necessary to rebuild the town hall.

What has been preserved from earlier construction phases through the many changes is not entirely certain. One of the basement rooms is probably still Romanesque, so it is significantly older than the first mention. What function the building might have had during this period has not yet been finally determined. There is also a Gothic opening on the market side, which was walled up to a window in 1832. It also comes from one of the previous buildings. The Ratskeller was temporarily located here . Ultimately, it is assumed that the room that first housed Dürnitz and then the kitchen is the room that has been preserved with a groin vault.

In 1683 it was rebuilt. This simplified reconstruction with stepped gables and roof turrets has been preserved to this day, it was only reduced by two porches on the market side and church street side during a renovation in 1832 and 1833 and expanded to include additions to the east in the years 1992 to 1995. Previously, various renovation plans were not implemented in 1918 and 1939/41. Since there are no other outstanding buildings on the market, the relatively simple structure with its open staircase and rectangular windows still dominates the market, on the east side of which it stands, and Kirchstrasse, which is narrowed by the building. In addition, it forms a popular photo motif in conjunction with the church and castle. The town hall is under monument protection and is listed in the monument register with registration number 094 83437.
