The town hall Velten at Rathausstraße 10 is the seat of the city administration, the city council and the mayor of the Brandenburg city of Velten .

history

The building was originally built as a privately operated power station with a capacity of 300,000 kWh . It was not until 1909 that it passed into municipal hands. When the demand for energy continued to rise , particularly due to the pottery industry , it was shut down in 1911 and the community was connected to the overland power grid.

During the First World War , the building served as a food store. In February 1921, the architects Joseph Scherer and Heinrich Aeppli (Berlin-Lichterfelde) presented their plans to convert the former power station into a town hall. About one and a half years later, on September 5, 1922, the plans were implemented and the town hall was handed over to its destination. The terracotta decorations on the main and side portal as well as above the windows were fired by Richard Blumenfeld Veltener Ofenfabrik AG . Since then, it has served as the seat of the respective municipality and, from 1935, the city administration. In 1945, a Soviet headquarters was set up here for a short time.

In 1991/1992 the stove heating was replaced by central heating and the roof with the ridge was renewed. In 2001 the facade and the windows were renewed and a year later an elevator was put into operation.
