Falkland City Hall

The Falkland Town Hall is a town hall in the Scottish town of Falkland in the Council Area Fife . In 1971, the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish list of monuments in the highest monument category A.

history

The Burgh Falkland used a 17th century Tolbooth in the same location. In 1800 the application for a new school building was submitted. Since the Tolbooth was in need of repair at the same time, the council decided to build a combined building for cost reasons, which should house both the school and the Tolbooth. The following year the council accepted a draft by Thomas Barclay and David Gardner which was "by far the cheapest". The new town hall was built in the same year. Construction work on the tower probably lasted until 1802.

description

The classicist town hall stands at the confluence of the Back Wynd with the High Street . With edge lengths of 12.1 m and 11.9 m, the sandstone building has an almost square floor plan. Although the north facade is the main facade, the striking tower rises from the east facade. Both facades are similarly detailed and three axes wide. Central projections with concluding triangular gables emerge flat from the facades. The elongated portals at the foot are embedded in round arched recesses. The flanking windows are also rounded. The 24 m high clock tower ends in an octagonal lantern with a pointed helmet. The final roofs are covered with slate.
