The Town Hall Square ( Estonian Raekoja plats ) is a square in the Estonian capital Tallinn ( German  Reval ).

location

The square is located in the center of the old town of Reval. Eight old town streets converge on it, Schuhstraße (Estonian: Kinga ), Mundtenstraße ( Mundi ), Weckengang ( Saiakang ), Apothekerstraße ( Apteegi ), Markthalsgasse ( Vanaturu kael ), Goldschmiedestraße ( Kullassepa ), Dunkerstraße ( Dunkri ) and Fuhrmannsgasse ( Voorimehe ).

History and buildings

A first mention of the place is from the year 1313. It was paved as early as the 14th century. It has had its current name since 1923. Before that, the names Neumarkt , Deutscher Markt , Großer Markt and Swedish Market were in use. For a long time it served as a market and the central location of the city of Reval. In the middle of the square there was a pillory from 1337 to 1816 . A carved head, originally on the pillory, is shown today in the Kiek tower in de Kök . Its location is marked on the square. In 1441 Christmas was celebrated on the square.

Its function as a marketplace ended in 1896. Since that year, regular trade has been carried out elsewhere. Even today, however, the place is used for annual fairs. The Reval Christmas market also takes place here.

A stone slab is embedded in the pavement of the square, which marked the center of the city, from which distances within Reval were indicated. A capital L made from two stones indicates the place where a priest was beheaded. It was the only execution within the city walls of Reval. He had killed the tavern's maid with an ax in anger.

The umstandene of many historic buildings Town Hall Square from standing on its south side is dominated town hall . The well-known Ratsapotheke is located on the northeast side (house number 11). Until 1944, the historic weighing house was located in the middle of the square , but it was destroyed in the Soviet air raid on Reval . A marking on the square indicates the former location.

Even today, the square has a central function for Reval. There are a large number of restaurants in the surrounding houses. Many of the buildings are listed , including the buildings at Rathausplatz 16 and 17 and the Höppner-Haus at number 18.
