Rational Synergy is software for version management and configuration management (English Configuration Management , CM) of source code and other files required for software development. It was originally called Continuus / CM until 2000, the company Continuus of Telelogic was purchased. Telelogic has since developed and sold the product under the name Synergy . In April 2008, IBM took over Telelogic. All software products became part of the IBM Rational software portfolio .

Task-based configuration management

The task-based approach (English task , "task order") allows teams, work orders ( work tasks to generate) associated with errors or change requests ( change requests are linked). When developers work on certain tasks, the affected objects (file versions) are automatically assigned to the task and transferred to the development process with it. Because configurations and publications ( releases ) can be produced by the combination of a number of tasks, Synergy allows complete traceability ( traceability ) the implementation of change requests and error corrections in a given build .

MultiSite

Another extension of Synergy is MultiSite , DCM ( distributed configuration management ). This means that different locations can exchange source code, tasks, change requests and process definitions. The exchanged elements can be defined via the graphical user interface. Filters ensure that only certain information is exchanged with other locations, which is important both for reasons of security and for economical use of the available network bandwidth.

Support of development processes

Synergy defines ready-made development processes and different roles (e.g. developer or build manager ), which can, however, be adapted to the needs of specific projects.

Community in Germany

Since 1999, German-speaking Synergy users (product name at the time of founding Continuus from the manufacturer of the same name) have been meeting regularly to exchange ideas and to formulate requirements for the tool. The user community set up by Materna GmbH is organized informally and independently of the manufacturer. Participation in the user meetings is open to everyone and is free of obligations. The locations for the user meetings change, but in the past mostly took place in the greater Dortmund and Munich areas.
