The Materna Information & Communications SE is a globally active company in the IT services . Materna was founded in 1980, the headquarters are in Dortmund.

The core business is IT projects in the business-to-business area and for public administration; International clients are in particular airlines and airports, which Materna equips with automatic check-in and baggage drop-off systems.

history

Materna building

The Materna company was founded in 1980 by Winfried Materna and Helmut an de Meulen as Dr. Materna GmbH founded. The founders met during an academic research project at the University of Dortmund ; the first client was the computer manufacturer Nixdorf .

Initially, Materna specialized in setting up computer networks. In 1992 the company began programming software solutions for public administration. It all started with the ATLAS software developed on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Finance for paperless customs processing when importing and exporting goods.

In 1995, Materna took over the SMS service for Mannesmann D2 (now Vodafone ). In the following years, other large mobile communications companies became Materna customers, including Viag Interkom (now O2 or Telefónica) and E-Plus . The company's Dortmund data center ( Short Message Service Center ) distributed 300 million SMS messages a month in 2000.

In 2005, Materna acquired the Heidelberg-based SAP consulting service provider cbs Corporate Business Solutions GmbH, which was founded in 1995 .

The founders Winfried Materna and Helmut an de Meulen remained managing partners until 2015. From February 2015, Helmut Binder, a salaried manager, took over operational management for the first time. From May 2017 Michael Knopp was commercial director and CFO. The process of changing the legal form from a GmbH to a Societas Europaea (SE), which began in September 2017, was completed with the entry as an SE on September 14, 2018. In April 2020, Martin Wibbe took over as CEO.

Business activity

Materna works for German authorities as well as for German and international corporations and medium-sized companies. The company's activities for public administration as well as airports and airlines are most perceived by the public.

Domestic business contributed 83% to group sales in 2018. Internationally, Materna works mainly in the areas of automated passenger and baggage handling in air traffic as well as SAP consulting.

Business areas

The Materna group of companies has been organizing its business activities in four segments since January 2020. The areas of digital transformation and the public sector are mainly focused on domestic business; the Materna IPS and SAP consulting areas are internationally oriented.

Digital transformation

The Digital Transformation business area comprises consulting, needs-based implementation, managed service and technical support for market-leading cloud and software technologies as well as development services for company-specific IT projects in the context of the digital transformation of business and administrative processes.

Public Sector

The Public Sector division supports authorities in the strategic and IT-technical implementation of government tasks on the way to digital administration.

On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Finance and in cooperation with today's ITZBund , Materna has been working on the development, integration and expansion of the IT specialist process ATLAS (Automated Tariff and Local Customs Processing System), which was converted from the German customs administration to the automated electronic Customs clearance and internal processing of the import and export of goods is used.

Materna was or is a framework contract partner of various federal and state authorities in extensive digitization projects in connection with the e-government law . On the basis of the federal form management system, Materna developed a. a. Materna IPS

Materna has equipped around 70 airports worldwide with the self-service systems sold under the Materna IPS (Intelligent Passenger Solutions) brand for automatic passenger handling and baggage drop-off; The installation of the corresponding technology at Zurich Airport is currently planned (2019). Materna machines are used by the airports of Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, London, Bangalore, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec, Miami and Denver, among others.

SAP consulting

The Materna subsidiary cbs Corporate Business Solutions acts as an international management consultancy and SAP solution partner for large and medium-sized industrial companies.

The focus of her work is the merging or separation of SAP systems after company acquisitions and mergers, migration and merging of data from different systems, and support with the introduction of SAP S / 4HANA .

Research cooperation

Materna maintains research collaborations with several universities and research institutes. Controversy

In October 2016, Golem published an article about Materna, in which inside information about u. a. the prevention of a works council and controversial bonus payments, as well as the associated reductions in employee salaries to increase sales of the company were discussed. The Golem portal is based on statements from current and former employees of the main office in Dortmund. An official statement from Materna is not available. The company's works council was founded at the end of 2016.
