The Schüchtermann-Klinik in Bad Rothenfelde ( Lower Saxony ) is one of the five largest heart centers in Germany with over 10,000 inpatients treated each year . As a special clinic for cardiovascular diseases, it deals with the diagnosis and therapy of congenital and acquired diseases of the heart and blood vessels in adulthood. The integrated clinic concept includes the medical departments of cardiology , cardiac surgery , anesthesiology and rehabilitation .
history
The clinic started its work in 1973 as an internal medicine clinic. With the introduction of follow-up treatment after acute myocardial infarction and stroke, the clinic developed into a rehabilitation center in 1975, which differed significantly from a sanatorium or spa clinic.
In 1977 the department for cardiac catheter diagnostics was opened, which today has five cardiac catheter laboratories. A cardiological intensive and monitoring unit followed in 1981. The first catheter operation to remove vascular constrictions (balloon dilatation, PTCA) took place in April 1984. In 1990 the Schüchtermann-Klinik was expanded to include an extension with a doctor's wing, gymnastics hall, physiotherapy room, lecture rooms for health training and rooms for the psychological department.
With the start-up of cardiac surgery in 1993, initially with three operating theaters, an intensive care unit, a monitoring station and the anesthesiology unit, the Schüchtermann Clinic was expanded into a heart center. Today, cardiac surgery has five operating rooms and a hybrid operating room, which was completed in 2010.
After the Heart Center Osnabrück-Bad Rothenfelde was founded in 2000, acute and emergency cardiological care has become possible for the population of the city and district of Osnabrück. The heart center is under the joint sponsorship of the Hospital Osnabrück , the Marienhospitals Osnabrück (since 2003) and the Schüchtermann Schiller Kliniken GmbH & Co. KG
Since 2008, further renovations and new building measures have taken place. In 2009 the new cardiac surgery intensive care and monitoring ward as well as a comfort ward went into operation. The clinic has had a chest pain unit since 2010, to which patients with unexplained chest pain can go. From spring 2013 to June 2015, the rehabilitation building from 1973 will also be completely refurbished and modernized.
Family foundation
In 1894 Heinrich Schüchtermann and his wife Antoinette Schiller founded the Schüchtermann-Schiller'sche Family Foundation in Dortmund . The joint will of the childless spouses provided for the foundation as joint heir and stipulated that they should make a considerable amount available annually for social purposes via the city of Dortmund. Today, in addition to the Schüchtermann Clinic in Bad Rothenfelde, the Dörenberg Clinic in Bad Iburg , medicos.Osnabrück GmbH and several medical care centers are an essential part of the family foundation's assets.
Departments
Cardiac surgery
The cardiac surgery department provides care in northern Germany, especially in emergencies, with an impending heart attack or acute heart failure.
Cardiac surgery covers adult cardiac surgery, with the exception of heart transplantation. The close cooperation with the neighboring cardiology department enables the interdisciplinary treatment of acute myocardial infarctions and the direct transfer of cardiac unstable patients from the cardiac catheterization laboratories. In cooperation with the cardiology department, pacemakers and defibrillators are implanted and special catheter-supported procedures are carried out. The cardiac technology division is responsible for the provision and operation of various extracorporeal systems, including the heart-lung machine .
cardiology
Cardiology has diagnostic and therapeutic options and treats more than 5,000 patients annually. As part of the Osnabrück-Bad Rothenfelde Heart Center, the cardiology department works together with the Osnabrück Clinic and the Niels-Stensen Clinics . The department includes 40 beds, a chest pain unit, an intensive care and monitoring ward, a cardiological care ward, various cardiological outpatient departments and an institute for cardiovascular prevention. Every year the department carries out 5,000 catheter examinations and interventions, more than 1,000 electrophysiological examinations and cardiac catheter ablations as well as 600 pacemaker and defibrillator implantations in a total of five cardiac catheter laboratories.
rehabilitation
The rehabilitation department has 179 beds. Over 2,500 patients are cared for as part of inpatient follow-up treatment each year. In addition to cardiological, angiological and cardiac surgery patients, the department specializes in rehabilitation after heart transplantation and artificial heart implantation.
Through the integrated approach of the clinic and the cross-departmental collaboration with the acute areas of the clinic, rehabilitation patients should receive short treatment routes, seamless transitions between the individual care levels and coordinated diagnostic and therapeutic measures.
anesthesia
The department carries out around 4,000 anesthesia per year at a total of 13 anesthesia workstations in the cardiac surgery and cardiology departments. The majority of anesthesia is general anesthesia that is performed in the context of heart operations using heart-lung machines. Pain management, the laboratory and transfusion medicine are also located in this department.
Institute for Prevention and Sports Medicine
The Institute for Prevention and Sports Medicine deals with cardiological, sports medicine and performance diagnostic issues. It offers methods with which the condition of the cardiovascular system, vitality and performance can be checked and optimized. In addition to being equipped with u. a. Various types of ergometers are available to the IPS in cooperation with other departments of the Schüchtermann Clinic, with the diagnostic options of a heart center.
Certification
The clinic has been certified according to the international DIN EN ISO 9001 since 2001. Since 2008, the Schüchtermann-Klinik has been one of the acute hospitals in Germany that has received the Pain-Free Clinic Initiative certificate from TÜV Rheinland .
The Chest Pain Unit was certified on the basis of the quality standards in 2011 by the German Society for Cardiology - Heart and Circulatory Research.
The rehabilitation area is certified by the German Society for Prevention and Rehabilitation of Cardiovascular Diseases.
In September 2009, the cardiac surgical intensive and intermediate care ward of which was endowment care with the certificate "members always welcome!" excellent.
In 2013, the clinic took part in the “Clean Hands Campaign” to improve hand disinfection and thus earned the certificate in the silver category. The quality of the food supply is assessed as part of an external certification by the Quality Association for Nutrition Competence and received the RAL quality mark for competence in eating correctly.
research
The main focuses of the research work include basic research on the development of cardiovascular diseases, the development and validation of innovative biotechnological processes for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and basic research on the pathophysiological mechanisms in acute myocardial infarction. In addition, the rehabilitation department is doing intensive research into new procedures in the field of telemedicine .
