Short Message Service Center
A short message service center ( SMSC ) is a component of a GSM - UMTS - or LTE - mobile network . It is responsible for storing, forwarding, converting and delivering messages from the Short Message Service .
The full name in the 3GPP specification documents is Short Message Service - Service Center ( SMS-SC ).
function
The functions and capabilities of an SMS-SC to be implemented are only briefly specified by the 3GPP, the protocols to be used only specified in the form of a non-binding proposal.
The term SMSC is often used for the entire transmission chain for short messages within the cellular network.
The actual SMS-SC takes on the following tasks:
- Delivery of short messages to mobile users
- Receipt of short messages from mobile users
- Processing of the delivery confirmation of messages from the MSC
- Processing of the delivery confirmation of messages from the fixed network
- Observance of the validity period in the messages
- Creation of a unique time stamp in short messages
- Sending delivery confirmations to mobile users
- Sending of delivery confirmations to the fixed network
- Overwriting of short messages in mobile devices
shipping
A short message sent by a terminal in the cellular network is referred to as SM MO ( Short Message Mobile Originated ). The resulting processes are:
- The message is from the terminal to the MSC transmitted
- The MSC obtains information from the VLR about the sending subscriber. These can consist of information about the blocking of the participant or booked additional services
- If the information received does not conflict with this, the MSC forwards the message to an SMS-IWMSC ( SMS-InterWorking MSC )
- The SMS-IWMSC obtains information about the message path to be used from the HLR of the target subscriber
- The SMS-IWMSC forwards the message to a suitable SMS-SC
reception
A short message that a terminal device receives in the cellular network is referred to as SM MT ( Short Message Mobile Terminated ). The resulting processes are:
- The message to be delivered is in the SMS-SC
- The SMS-SC forwards the message to an SMS-GMSC ( SMS gateway MSC )
- The SMS-GMSC obtains information about the message path to be used from the HLR of the target subscriber
- The SMS-GMSC delivers the message to the responsible MSC
- The MSC obtains information from the VLR about the receiving subscriber. These can consist of information about the blocking of the participant or booked additional services
- If the information received does not conflict with this, the MSC delivers the message to the end user
- The terminal generates a receipt upon request
- The MSC forwards the acknowledgment of receipt of the SMS GMSC further
- The SMS-GMSC forwards the receipt to the SMS-SC
- The SMS-SC generates a delivery confirmation for the sending subscriber. This is delivered in the same way as a normal short message
Short messages can also be forwarded from a network element in the IP network to an SMS-SC using the UCP or SMPP protocols . This option is used by mobile network operators to send automatically generated short messages for information or as part of value-added services to mobile network subscribers.
Transmission protocols for short messages
For the transmission of short messages has European Telecommunications Standards Institute ( English European Telecommunications Standards Institute , ETSI) following network protocols standardized.
- Short Message Peer to Peer (SMPP) of the SMS Forum
- Computer Interface to Message Distribution (CIMD) from Nokia
- External Machine Interface / Universal Computer Protocol (EMI / UCP) from Logica
- Open Interface Specification (OIS) of the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA)
- Telecator Alphanumeric Protocol (TAP) from Motorola
