Ratlam was one of the princely states of the Central India Agency of British India in what is now the state of Madhya Pradesh . Its capital was the place Ratlam . Ratan Singh, a prince from the house of the Rathore - Rajputs of Marwar (Jodhpur), fought in the service of the great mogul Shah Jahan and was enfeoffed with Ratlam by him in 1652. Maharaja Keshav Das (1684–95) lost Ratlam after a dispute with a Mughal officer. After the Mughal had forgiven him, he got Sitamau as a fief. Maharaja Chhatrasal (1705-06) got Ratlam again, which came under the suzerainty of Scindia von Gwalior in the course of the Marathas .

Ratlam was a British protectorate from 1819 to 1947 and in 1901 had an area of 1795 km² and 84,000 inhabitants. The Maharaja was annexed to India on June 15, 1948 and joined the Madhya Bharat Princely Union on June 16 . On November 1, 1956, all princely states of the Union were dissolved and incorporated into the state of Madhya Pradesh .
