Rat Castle

Rattin Castle ( Irish Caisleán Raitin ) is the ruin of a tower house southwest of Kinnegad in County Westmeath, Ireland . The castle ruins date back to the 16th century and were built as a defensive point for the lands in the area.

The lands originally belonged to Hugh de Lacy and then fell to John d'Arcy . The Niederungsburg remained in the family until the Irish rebellion in 1641 and was then forfeited to the crown.

Today the M6 motorway passes near the castle ruins; all four sides of the Tower House are largely intact.
