Ravensworth Castle is a ruined castle from the 14th century in the village of Ravensworth in the England management unit North Yorkshire . English Heritage has listed it as a Grade I Historic Building.

history

There may have been a castle at Ravensworth since the Norman conquest of England , but the remains of Ravensworth Castle that survive to this day date from the late 14th century when the castle belonged to Henry 1st Baron FitzHugh . In 1391 he paved 81 hectares around the castle and created a park. Demolition of the castle began in the 16th century; the stones were used for other buildings in the area.

On February 4, 1969, English Heritage listed Ravensworth Castle and its park wall as Grade I Historic Buildings. Historic buildings of the first degree are those that are “of exceptional interest, sometimes also viewed as internationally important”. The castle and the nearby earthworks have also been designated as a Scheduled Monument .

architecture

The castle is surrounded by a dry moat . It was built from sandstone and covered with stone . Today there is still a three-storey tower attached to a gatehouse and various wall and tower fragments.
