RawTherapee is a RAW converter for converting and processing raw photographic data from digital cameras into common image formats . It uses DCRaw , but unlike other such programs, it only reads in the RAW files. In contrast, RawTherapee uses its own algorithms for image development. RawTherapee is currently available for Windows , Linux and macOS (from 10.9) and is being actively developed. On January 4, 2010, RawTherapee was licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and has been Free Software since then .

application

RawTherapee offers very advanced setting options that many commercial converters do not offer, white and black point balancing on RAW level, contrast per level of detail ( wavelet- based), pyramidal noise filter or definition of the output gradation curve . On the other hand, there is a lack of functions for cataloging and managing image stocks or for selective processing of image sections, as other RAW converters have. Therefore, RawTherapee is often used in addition to image editing programs especially for difficult recordings.

support

RAW image formats typically offer a higher color depth (10 to 16 bits per channel ) than JPG files (8 bits per channel), contain the almost unprocessed data from the camera sensor (with individual color pixels according to the Bayer color filter matrix, without transformation into a concrete color space ) and are also available uncompressed or compressed without loss . In order to avoid the accumulation of rounding and compression losses, it makes sense to initially make changes to the image with a high color depth based on the raw data and only save the result as a JPG file in the last step.

In addition to RAW files (e.g. in the universal DNG format, in camera-specific formats or .CRW files created with CHDK ), RawTherapee can also save image data in JPG (8 bit), PNG (8 or 16 bit) and TIFF -Read format (8, 16 or 32 bit).

Internally, RawTherapee calculates from version 3.1 with floating point arithmetic and thus practically stepless, which makes the processing robust against the propagation of rounding errors ( posterization artifacts) and the intermittent overflow or underflow of color values. The disadvantage here is the high memory requirement . Up to and including version 3.0 16-bit integer arithmetic was used, which at least enabled finer gradations than the 8-bit arithmetic of simple image processing programs.

Unlike most RAW converters, you can choose between different demosaicing algorithms with RawTherapee (AMaZE, IGV, LMMSE, EAHD, HPHD, VNG4, DCB, AHD, Fast). This allows a very fine control of image artifacts .
