Raymond Escholier
Raymond Escholier (born December 25, 1882 in Paris , † September 19, 1971 in Nîmes ) was a French museum curator, politician, journalist, author, art critic and biographer of Victor Hugo .
life and work
Escholier (actually Escolier) studied in Paris and joined the museum administration. In 1913 he came to the Maison de Victor Hugo Museum and was a curator there from 1920 . In 1921 he became head of the cabinet of Aristide Briand . From 1922 he wrote regularly art reviews for the daily newspaper La Dépêche du Midi (Toulouse). From 1924 to 1925 he edited the magazine Demain . In 1933 he became director of the Petit Palais Museum (Paris) and organized important art exhibitions until 1940. He did not appear during the time of the Vichy regime . In 1956 he became head of culture for the city of Paris.
Together with his wife, Marie-Louise Pons Tande (1876-1956), who declined to be named, Escholier wrote numerous novels that appeared under his name, including Cantegril (Paris 1921, Occitan Toulouse 1975), of the Prix Femina awarded . He also published volumes of poetry.
Escholier was a Grand Officer in the Legion of Honor .
