Raymond Probst (1988)

Raymond Probst (born March 6, 1919 in Geneva ; † May 9, 2001 in Biel ) was a Swiss diplomat .

Life

Probst came from a family of Swiss abroad . He completed his schooling first in Riga and then in Biel, after the family had settled there from 1929. From 1937 to 1942 he studied law at the University of Bern , where he received his doctorate in 1954.

From 1942 he worked for the Federal Political Department . In 1945 he was involved in the repatriation of interned Russian soldiers, where he benefited from his knowledge of Russian.

In 1959 he became head of the "Political Service West". From 1966 to 1976 he was the delegate for trade agreements in the Federal Department of Economic Affairs (EVD) ; From 1976 to 1980 he was Switzerland's ambassador to Washington , and from 1980 to 1984 as successor to Albert Weitnauer State Secretary in the Political Directorate .

After his retirement in 1984, Probst remained true to his internal calling as President of the Swiss Society for Foreign Policy for many years.

Probst was married to Annemarie Rey and had one daughter.
