Real 3D, Inc. was a company engaged in the development of 3-D technology. It was founded by Lockheed Martin in January 1996 . The head office was in Orlando (Florida) / USA . The owners were Lockheed Martin (70% stake), Intel (20% stake) and Silicon Graphics (10% stake).

history

The roots of Real 3D go back to the Apollo program of NASA , for which General Electric a simulator for the moon landing developed. This graphic technology from General Electric was later licensed by Lockheed Martin and passed on to Real 3D. These patents also prompted a patent lawsuit against ATI in 1999.

On October 21, 1999, Lockheed Martin finally announced the sale of Real 3D to Intel. As a result, Intel settled the legal dispute with ATI Technologies in 2001 , which led to a cross-license agreement between the two companies: ATI got a license for chipsets with Intel bus protocols and Intel got access to ATI's graphics technology. A cross-license agreement was also concluded with 3dfx in 2000 . Thanks to Real 3D, Intel has gained access to extensive graphics patents.

Products

Real 3D became known, particularly for its 3D graphics since 1996 in arcade systems Sega Model 1 and Sega Model 2 from Sega was used. Over 300,000 of these devices were sold. In addition, Real 3D was the developer of Intel's only graphics chip so far, the Intel i740. With this, Intel wanted to take the step into the graphics market in 1999, but the chip lagged behind the competition and Intel abandoned this project.
