The Realschule Rheinhausen was the first and only Realschule in the then independent city of Rheinhausen and its surroundings on the left bank of the Rhine.

In 1959 the foundation stone was laid for the new building on Körnerplatz, for which there was a topping-out ceremony on May 27, 1960. This part of the building was inaugurated on June 18, 1961.

In April 1966 the third construction phase took place, the gymnasium and auditorium were added. The auditorium was officially inaugurated on June 18, 1966, and the gymnasium was completed in the following November.

In 1983/84 the Rheinhausen secondary school celebrated its 25th anniversary and held a large ceremony and an open day. The students made a contribution to the 50th birthday of the city of Rheinhausen by organizing a festival and, among other things, creating a calendar with motifs with the city itself.

In October 1997, a student exchange took place for the first time between the Rheinhausen Realschule and the Ferryhill Comprehensive School from Durham , which had been the partner school of the Rheinhausen Realschule since May 1997. Initially, around 30 students from the Rheinhausen secondary school attended the Comprehensive School in Northern England. a. attend classes for a week. In return, English students traveled to Rheinhausen in the summer of 1998 in order, among other things, to get to know German lessons there for a week. A school shop was introduced for these, which was run by students.
