Rechenkraft.net e. V. is the world's first and so far only non-profit association that has set itself the task of promoting distributed computing for non-profit purposes ( volunteer computing ). It is based in Marburg and was created after a founding meeting in October 2004 through official registration in June 2005 from the community of the website “Rechenkraft.net”. The public benefit was recognized by the Marburg tax office in July 2005 and is still in place today.
The aim of the association is to make the idea of donating computing time for a charitable cause better known and more popular. A means of communication for the members of the association, who are distributed around the world, is the associated Internet forum . In addition to partnerships with other projects (e.g. World Community Grid since 2007), the association operates an extensive, publicly accessible electronic library with publications on the topic of distributed computing. There is also an extensive wiki on projects and platforms for distributed computing. The association operates a cluster which is located at the Humboldt University in Berlin .
In spring 2009 the construction of the Rechenkraft.net seismic array began. This consists of a worldwide distribution of seismic sensors, which - based on the Quake-Catcher Network project - are supposed to register earthquakes .
