The Rechensteg is a listed pedestrian bridge over the Ischl and connects the cadastral communities Bad Ischl and Jainzen.

The bridge has a total span of 54.5 meters. The clear widths of the two trusses are 16.8 and 23.6 meters, respectively.

history

At the place of the bridge there was initially a rake for the wood drift , which is mentioned in chronicles as early as 1590. The foundations of the current bridge date from 1859. The damage caused by the floods in 1897 and 1899 led to the abandonment of the structure and in 1901 to a new building in its current form, although the superstructure was not completed until 1912 according to an inscription.

The defects found during an inspection in 2006 made it necessary to close the bridge. Since the renovation of the existing structure proved to be technically and above all economically sensible, the building department of the city of Bad Ischl, in coordination with the Federal Monuments Office , decided to renew the supporting structure of the bridge while maintaining the original appearance.

Renovation and reconstruction

The demolition of the superstructure began in 2008 before the building tender was issued in order to obtain as much information as possible for the detailed planning. Railings and bridge piers were carefully dismantled, numbered and stored.

When planning the new truss structures, there were minor changes compared to the original. It was a compromise between a faithful reconstruction and compliance with current building regulations and standards. Among other things, the thickness of the truss struts had to be increased slightly in order to comply with current regulations on concrete cover. All deviations in this regard were discussed with the Federal Monuments Office.

The lower edge of the new supporting structures had to be raised by 17 cm due to a notification under water law. In contrast to the original supporting structures, which were directly connected to the substructure without storage, the newly manufactured lattice structures were supported on reinforced elastomers in accordance with the state of the art. The renovated bridge railings were supplemented with glazing on the inside.

The planning of the reconstruction was also made difficult by the location of the bridge with only one access road with several bottlenecks. Therefore precast solutions were dispensed with and all parts were made of in- situ concrete .

The reconstruction caused costs of approx. € 500,000. Since December 18, 2009, the walkway has been open to the public again.
